Seamor ROV Has New Owners

Seventeen years ago, a new remotely operated underwater vehicle made its first tentative excursions. The vehicle was called Scallop, later to be known as ROV Seamor. This was the original product developed by Inuktun Services Ltd., the now internationally famous Nanaimo based robotics development company.

Today, the Seamor legacy will continue under the ownership of a new Vancouver Island company. "The product's intellectual property rights have been sold to Seamor Marine Ltd. ROV Seamor was and will always be one of our most significant products", said Inuktun president Colin Dobell. "Our focus at Inuktun has now shifted to pipeline inspection products and services. The time was right to sell Seamor to another company". The original target market for Scallop was recreational boating. That market proved less fruitful than industrial use. Industrial users, with a broad range of requirements, have been the main users of ROV Seamor.

The versatility of the basic vehicle has been extended in many ways over the years. Seamor can be fitted with specialpurpose attachments such as sonar imaging sensors and mechanical manipulators. The unit can reach underwater depths of up to 1,000 feet. Seamor ROVs are still being manufactured in Nanaimo by the new owners. Seamor Marine Ltd. was incorporated in December, 2006. The product transfer took effect in February.
