Power Tech Inc., a remote video inspection company headquartered in Sequim, Washington, use their Versatrax 150™ pipe crawler for far more than originally intended. Although they own a fleet of similar equipment — including borescopes, push cameras, radio detection equipment and ground penetrating radar — the Versatrax is the real “work horse” for a range of services they provide to the petroleum, pulp & paper, and municipal water industries.
One recent project, involving cleaning and inspecting inside a propeller shaft, is a case in point. A damaged control rod within the 255 millimeter bore shaft had led to the disabling of an oil tanker. With no dry dock space available and no time to waste, the work was undertaken by ballasting up the stern and prop at wet dock in Port Angeles, WA. Maintenance crews removed the propeller and control rod to allow direct access to the prop shaft bore, and called for help. Based on the excellent results achieved through previous video inspection projects, they reached out to Power Tech who, using their Versatrax 150™ crawler system, found severe scoring inside the shaft.
When the engineers decided that the prop shaft could not be removed, they went back to Power Tech looking for a way to remotely hone the 8 metre long bore. Fortunately James Luna, President of Power Tech, knew just what to do. First, using the Versatrax 150™, he designed a new remotely operated pipeline cleaning system with a Warthog water-jetting head. Then, when a video inspection performed after the cleaning revealed unwanted brass embedded in the bottom of the grooves, Luna designed a linear power brush system that could be indexed remotely. The combination of experience, ingenuity and reliable modular equipment resulted in an almost immediate solution that worked flawlessly.
Without the ability of the Versatrax 150™ to adapt to numerous configurations, he says, the project would have taken much longer. And the cost savings were substantial.
“If a company needs a versatile remote inspection tool that can do much more than just travel down a pipe, invest your money in the best CAN DO machine.” — James Luna, President of Power Tech, on the Versatrax 150™ system.
This Power Tech project is just one example of our creative clients doing amazing things with Inuktun technology. According to Inuktun CEO, Colin Dobell, “We love working with clients like Power Tech, who know how to really take advantage of our Multi-Mission Modular technology. James has all sorts of crazy ideas on how to build new remote inspection or cleaning tools — and he always seems to make them happen. We’re honoured that he chooses Inuktun technology.”
If you have stories to tell about how you’ve used your Inuktun equipment to solve difficult challenges, let us know and we’ll share them here. And if you are in the business and want a great deal on a used VideoRay ROV, contact James at Power Tech (his is for sale; just don’t ask him for his Versatrax 150™!).
