NANAIMO, BC —
Recently seen at the local pulp and paper mill was Inuktun’s Versatrax 300™ long range pipe inspection crawler. The rental was commissioned last September to coincide with the mill’s annual shutdown, for an inspection of original wood stave piping dating back to the 1950s. The 42 inch pipeline carries water from the Nanaimo River to the mill for daily operations. The mill is actively replacing the known bad portions of the pipeline, and an internal examination of the segments that appear healthy from the outside was required to inform the maintenance process.
Given the inaccessibility of the deployment area, the Versatrax 300™ was craned into place on the other side of the line from the service road. The inspection vehicle covered 1,800 metres, and deployment was achieved through a holding tank at the high point of the pipeline; the pipe runs in two directions from this tank. The crawler was operated by a mill employee who had been trained for the job, and an Inuktun technician was onsite to oversee the assessment.
