MDB Marine Ltd., a company founded by maritime and offshore professionals who provide Micro ROV services for the remote visual inspection of underwater infrastructure found in difficult inshore and offshore locations, recently contacted Inuktun Europe Ltd. with a particularly tough challenge. After the unsuccessful attempt to insert an isolation plug in a water outlet pipe on an FPSO using a WROV, MDB Marine turned to Inuktun for a solution.
While the action of inserting a plug appears trivial, complex circumstances required Inuktun’s Multi-Mission Modular (IM3™) technology to help get the job done. MDB Marine needed a remote inspection system that could negotiate the bends and vertical pipe inspections while performing structural integrity assessment and monitoring of the isolation plug insertion one metre below the waterline. Inuktun Europe rented the VT100 Vertical Crawler™ to MDB Marine who employed this robotic crawler with three operatives and a Micro ROV to complete the remote handling application. The mission was successfully carried out in just three days and included the internal cleaning of the pipe followed by an inspection using retrofitted custom build tools by MDB Marine. They performed UT readings of the hull and surrounding areas before installation of the plug. The VT100 Vertical Crawler™ was also used to identify the extent of any issues. According to Derek Bond, Operations Director for MDB Marine, the “data retrieved was invaluable in the completion of the maintenance and repair plans.”
The VT100 Vertical Crawler™ combines the power of three Microtracs™ and an expandable tripod chassis to easily navigate multiple bends and vertical pipe segments found in the oil and gas, nuclear, petrochemical, and many other industries. Constructed out of marine grade aluminum and stainless steel, the VT100 Vertical Crawler™ offers the durability and submersible demands for the most challenging underwater applications.
