Inuktun Sighting #148: OnSpec Custom Solution for Bridge Cable Inspection

This week’s #InuktunInTheWild sighting features an OnSpec Custom Solution in a video by TI Corp’s Highway Maintenance and Operations team. According to the crew, it’s one of the cooler tools they get to use to manage and maintain bridge inspections.

Inuktun’s Versatrax MicroClimber™ was developed for the Province of British Columbia to inspect the Port Mann Bridge on Highway 1. Its unique circular design lends itself to piling inspection and cleaning, snow removal, subsea guy wire assessment and cleaning, and any other general external pipe inspection and cleaning applications. With a minimum diameter of 160 millimetres (or 6 inches) and a tether length up to 260 metres (or 860 feet), the MicroClimber™ collects repeatable, actionable, meaningful and preventive data through real-time photo and video recording. Equipped with eight Crystal Cam® cameras, this OnSpec Custom Solution travels up to nine metres (or 30 feet) a minute on a Microtrac™ crawler track base to get an all-inclusive look at conditions.

Nicknamed the ‘night crawler’ by TI Corp’s team, the system is used for routine inspections of Port Mann Bridge at night. These structural integrity assessments are performed annually to confirm the remaining useful life of the protective sheathing on the bridge cables.

We have to agree with TI Corp – the night crawler is a pretty unique and cool piece of technology to use during highway infrastructure maintenance. Get a closer look of the MicroClimber™ in the gallery below.
